About The Film

“She Sang, and That Made All the Difference,” a documentary by filmmaker and San Jose State University journalism professor Dona Hodge Nichols, is about the musicians and the music that changed us as a culture. It’s about the music that helped us usher in and accept changes to our society. Her focus is on the women who made the music that influenced change.

This film highlights the ways in which every successful woman in country music has had to fight obstacles that don’t stand in the way of their male counterparts. Women don’t get the same stage time, air play or respect, and they’re always judged for their age and appearance.

And yet, there are women who have powered through and made a real impact on our culture—some in the spotlight and others from behind the scenes. This film includes interviews with many of those women and delves into the challenges they faced on their way to country music success. Thanks to Producer Wood Newton, we were able to conduct many of these interviews in Chet Atkins’ former office on Music Row, commonly referred to as “The Magic Room.”

We are currently in the editing room, shaping the film we hope you’ll see by the end of 2025 in your favorite theater or film festival. For more information about the film, contact us at SheSangPR@gmail.com.
